Research has shown that the most frequently used method of training in all sorts of organisations is “on-the-job” training. It’s a practical, convenient and cost-effective way of ensuring that people are taught how to do their jobs by those who know how to do their jobs. Or is it? While it makes good sense to pass on the skills and knowledge of experienced staff to those who are less experienced, it can all go badly wrong if the trainer doesn’t know how to impart the knowledge effectively. It doesn’t necessary follow that those who are good at a job can teach others how to do the job!
